You know that feeling when you're walking through the grass on a cool summer night? After a hot summer day, the smell of warm grass, just as the sun dips behind the mountains? That's what Ellen and Rob's wedding was. It was the embodiment of those bittersweet late summer nights that make you remember what it feels like to be in love. And their Spruceton Inn Catskill wedding was certainly one to remember. And of course, it's always a treat to be able to visit my home state, New York.
The Spruceton Inn sits on land that was once seasonal hunting territory for the Haudenosaunee (Iroquois Confederacy) and Mohicans. But the earliest written accounts available detail that a Dutch family —the VanVulkenburghs— built the farmhouse that owners Casey and Steven live in now in the late 1700s. Now a bed and bar, it was even once The Schwarzenegger's Sunshine Valley House! But that's a story they save for patrons who visit the bar. As soon as Ellen and Rob told me this was to be their venue, I was hooked. An annual romantic getaway for them, they'd been visiting Spruceton for years, so this place was special.
And a Spruceton Inn Catskill wedding is something special indeed. Meadows full of wildflowers, views of the mountains, a creek running behind the gorgeous contemporary motel rooms. A bird watchers haven, and a calming retreat, Spruceton truly has it all. Not to mention Casey and Steven's kindness.
As wedding day kicked off, there were plenty of twists and turns, like the power going out for the entire property because a truck backed into the utility pole just as we were starting the day. But regardless, Ellen and Rob were there for nothing but a good time and made light of whatever was thrown at them. They truly embraced the chaos in the best way possible. With a romantic meadow ceremony, a tented sunlit reception, and plenty of funfetti wedding cake, they danced into the night.
